Color matched to the pile
The pale patch in your carpet, dyed back to the pile around it
When a stain has taken the color out instead of leaving dirt behind, cleaning cannot bring it back. A dye matched to your carpet can.
Chapter 01
Some stains are lost color, not dirt
Most spots on a carpet are dirt, and dirt comes out. A pale, bleached patch is a different thing. Bleach, certain cleaners and some household chemicals do not leave a mark on top of the fiber, they strip the dye out of it. What you see is carpet that has literally changed color in that spot.
That is why the same patch can look exactly the same after a thorough cleaning. There is nothing left to lift. The fiber is clean and it is simply the wrong color, and no amount of extra rinsing or scrubbing will put color back into it. It also explains why people give up on a spot they have already paid to have cleaned.

Brown cut-pile carpet with one pale, bleached patch
A dye matched to your pile, applied to the spot only
Spot dyeing starts by matching a carpet dye to the color of the carpet around the mark. That dye is then applied to the stained area and nowhere else, so the surrounding pile is left alone and the repaired patch blends into the floor instead of looking painted on.
The match is the whole job. Carpet is rarely one flat shade, since light, wear and years of cleaning shift it a little, so the dye is chosen against the pile as it looks today and not against the color on an old sample card. Applied to the mark alone, it brings the patch back into the range of the room around it.
Topeka Carpet Cleaning describes it as effective for almost all stains, and it is the right tool when the problem is color. If the carpet is damaged as well as discolored, with a burn or a hole, the better answer is a patch, and the same conversation will tell you which one fits.
Chapter 03
Weighing a dyed spot against a new room of carpet
The usual alternative to spot dyeing is replacing the carpet, and for one pale patch that means paying for an entire room to fix a few square inches. Spot dyeing is inexpensive by comparison, and the rest of the floor, the underlay and the furniture arrangement stay untouched.
