Burst pipe, failed heater

When a pipe bursts, the water you can see is the smaller problem

A busted pipe or a failed water heater, at a home or a business: the water is pulled out and the area dried all the way.

Chapter 01

What water does to the pad and subfloor while it sits

A burst pipe or a water heater that lets go does not stay where it started. Water spreads across the floor, soaks down into the carpet pad, wicks up the baseboards and works into the subfloor underneath. The carpet surface can look almost normal while the layers below it are holding a lot of water.

That hidden water is what causes the lasting damage. Pad stays wet long after the top of the carpet feels dry, and anything that stays wet in a closed room is an invitation for mold. The sooner the water is pulled out, the less of the floor it has had time to reach.

Extraction first, then drying that does not stop early

Topeka Carpet Cleaning handles water emergencies at homes and at businesses. The work happens in two parts. First the standing and soaked-in water is extracted from the carpet and floor. Then the area is dried completely, which is a separate job from extraction and the one that is easiest to cut short.

Extraction takes out the bulk. Drying deals with what extraction cannot reach: the moisture left in the pad, the lower wall and the floor beneath. Skipping or hurrying it is how a flood that was handled on day one turns into a musty smell a few weeks later.

Chapter 03

Drying is the step that decides whether mold starts

Mold needs moisture and time. Take the moisture away completely and it has nothing to start on. That is why the goal here is a fully dry floor, not a floor that feels dry on top. It is the whole reason the second half of the job exists.
