Patch, stretch, re-rake

Rippled carpet pulled flat, burned patches cut out and replaced

Waves are stretched back to the baseboards, a ruined section is swapped for matched carpet, and worn pile is cleaned, raked and trimmed to stand up again.

Chapter 01

Bumps, waves and the ridge people trip on

A wave in wall-to-wall carpet starts small. A corner lifts near a doorway, a ridge appears where a heavy sofa used to sit, and a few months later there is a rolling bump running half the length of the room. Carpet that was stretched tight when it went down can loosen over time, and once it has slack it keeps travelling every time someone walks across it.

A ridge is more than an eyesore. It catches a toe, it catches a vacuum, and the crest of the wave takes all of the foot traffic, so that strip wears out well ahead of the rest of the floor. The longer it is left, the harder it is to bring back.

Stretching back to the baseboards

Stretching takes the slack out of the carpet and pulls it back toward the baseboards, where it is held on the tack strip along the wall. Done properly, the bumps and waves disappear and the floor reads as one flat plane again, with no need to replace the carpet.

The stretch matters most in the places where a loose carpet does the most damage: along walls, through doorways and under the spots where furniture sat for years. Pulling the slack out once, and anchoring the edge again, is what stops the wave from reforming a few weeks later.

It is a job for a quote rather than a guess, because the right approach depends on how far the carpet has moved and what is underneath it. Topeka Carpet Cleaning gives a free, no-obligation quote, and you can describe the room over the phone at (785) 384-4460.

Chapter 03

Patching a ruined section and waking up flat pile

When a burn, a pet accident or a stubborn stain has ruined a small area, the whole room does not have to go. The damaged section is cut out and a matched piece of carpet is set in its place, so the repair sits in the pile instead of standing out from it. The best patches come from carpet that matches the original in color, pile and direction.

Worn, flattened pile is a different problem with a different fix. Traffic lanes crush the fiber until it lies down, and the answer is cleaning, raking and trimming so the pile stands back up and reads evenly across the room. If the damage is a pale mark where the color has gone rather than a hole, spot dyeing may be the better route, and the same call can sort out which one you need.
